I Spent $5,300… Is A Rolex A Bad Investment?

i-spent-5300-is-a-rolex-a-bad-investment

I recently spent just over $5,000 on a secondhand Rolex watch. I ended up buying a 1985 Rolex Datejust Two Tone Watch with the Blue Diamond Dial. After posting about it on Instagram, I had a number of people asking me why I would waste money on a watch. I thought it would be interesting to discuss this, so here is the answer. Is a Rolex watch a bad investment?

If you have the spare cash without compromising mortgage or other fundamentals then go for it. As a woman, i’d rather invest in a nice rolex watch than an expensive bag.

1 tip, Rolex's with gold and especially diamonds are the least favourite and actually often decrease the value. Look at 80's submariners for example. The steel ones go for about the same as the 2 tones. But the 2 tones were way more expensive to buy (when new). So if you want to earn a couple of K's better go with the steel ones. And especially the Submariner and Explorer 1 go up in value. Besides, an old date just is way harder to sell. So if you're buying it as an investment better go with the steel sport watches. Increase in value guaranteed.

You bought into the sales pitch hook line and sinker.. Rolex Submariner that sold for about $15,000 in 20003-2005ish, sell for $9900 today (on a good day). You might have been able to buy one for $11k back in 2003 if you were lucky. Rolex are not investments and should not be viewed as investments. The market is flooded with them, go on ebay and type in Rolex you'll find dozens of the same type of watch for sale. The appreciation is not all that great on the watches and they don't perform well especially when compared to real investments such as the DOW averages. The DOW average in 2002 was $9200.. If you had put that $15k into medium risk mutual funds in 02 you would have well over $80-100k today. If you bought the rolex you would have taken a $2-5k loss.

I bought a ceramic Date Sub 5 years ago for $6500 and could sell it for $10500 easy. Now that’s an investment!

Don't forget that a Rolex pays out dividents in the form of female companionship… 😉

DO NOT listen to this man! A DJ is not a appreciating asset, its more flat. Also, his DJ is probably around 10-20 years old already.
